History of IPv6

• IETF has been working on this since 1991
• Formed the ROAD group (Routing and Addressing) to investigate what next generation IP should be like
• In 1992, IAB recommended the next generation be called IPv7 ! and use
  • CIDR addressing/routing
  • use CLNP (Connectionless Network Protocol) from the ISO as the basis
• Caused lots of confusion, so renamed as IPng (next generation)
• IETF rejected this proposal
