CS 221 Lab 2 Spring 2011: Excel Fundamentals

Note: To save your work to complete later, copy/save the spreadsheet to a flash drive or your locker.

Part 1: Tutorial 2.2

Save this Excel spreadsheet for Tutorial 2.2 (in Chapter 2) to the desktop. The data have been entered into the spreadsheet for you. It should look like Figure 2.6 on page 25. Follow the steps from the textbook for Tutorial 2.2 starting on page 25 next to Figure 2.6: "Place your cursor.....".

Note: There is a typo on page 28 (fourth paragraph next to Figure 2.16):

"Now with cells A1:A8 still highlighted"

Should be:

"Now with cells A1:D8 still highlighted"

Show the instructor the spreadsheet as it appears in Figure 2.19 on page 29, BUT with the dates correctly displayed as described in the textbook.

Part 2: Tutorial 2.4 Example 2.2

Open a new spreadsheet (File-->New-->Blank workbook). Do Example 2.2 starting on page 39 in Tutorial 2.4. Follow the steps in the textbook to display the spreadsheet of trigonometric values. Show the instructor the spreadsheet as it looks in Figure 2.47 on page 41.

Note: The last paragraph before Figure 2.47 on page 41, adding the box and fill color to make the display "prettier", are optional.

Show the completed spreadsheet to your instructor.

Part 3: Tutorial 2.5 Examples 2.4 and 2.5

  1. Do Example 2.4 on page 44 (implementing absolute value using IF), starting with a new worksheet. When you have finished the example, test it by entering different values, including 0.
  2. Save this Excel spreadsheet for Chapter 2 Tutorial 2.5 Example 2.5 to the desktop. The data have been entered into the spreadsheet for you. Follow the steps starting at the bottom of page 45: "Type the formula..."

    Show the instructor the spreadsheet as it appears in Figure 2.59 on page 48.

    Note: The display steps on page 47-48 to make the display "prettier" are optional.

    As confirmation of your work, submit the last spreadsheet (lab2part3.xlsx) via the online submission page. You only have to submit this last spreadsheet, but you have to show the TA all three correct spreadsheets in the lab.
