Home Information Infrastructure
Most of the work to date on bringing
broadband telecommunication services to the home
has focused on specific applications, e.g.
delivery of entertainment services to the home.
Little attention has been paid to the tremendous
potential for new information applications inside the home.
The HII project is in the process of
establishing a platform for experimenting
with various combinations of
- transmission media (twisted pair, coax, POF, wireless)
- network substrates (CEBus, Ethernet, ATM)
- applications (video intercom, smart appliances).
Our goal is to gain an understanding of the architectural
requirements for a
home information infrastructure
that maximizes support for diverse applications, while also meeting the
stringent requirements implied by residential applications in terms of
configuration and maintenance, security and privacy, and of course
cost.
